Introduction: Right triangle pose or Trikonasana is derived from two Sanskrit words – Trikona meaning ‘triangle’ & asana meaning ‘seat’ or ‘posture’. Unlike most of the yoga poses, it requires keeping your eyes open so as to maintain the body balance.

Type of Level: The Right Triangle Pose is a beginner’s level yoga pose which can be performed without any difficulty.

How to Perform:

  • Stand straight and keep your legs approx. 3 feet apart. Turn your right foot to the right wall and the left foot slightly inwards. Make sure that your feet are well pressed on the floor and your body weight is equally balanced on both feet
  • Inhale and press your left hip outward to the left as you slide your arms to the right side, parallel to the floor
  • Exhale and rotate your arms, stretching your left arm up and resting your right hand against the right foot without distorting the waist
  • Press into the feet and pull up the knee caps. Bring your arms in one straight line keeping your shoulders stacked on top of each other. Press your left hip forward and the right one backward
  • Take long deep breaths and hold for 4-6 breaths. With each exhalation, relax your body more & more
  • To release: Inhale and bring the arms down to the sides and straighten the feet
  • Repeat the procedure on the other side

Best Place to Perform: Right Triangle pose should be practiced in a clean and hygienic place, immune to noise. Before you start, choose a clean yoga mat for the pose. Moreover, it is advisable to perform the pose in a room having fluorescent lighting rather than bulbs.

Precautions While Performing Triangle Pose:

  • This pose should not performed by people with back problems.
  • If you have heart conditions, practice this pose against a wall. Also, make sure you do not raise your arm but rest it along your hip.
  • If you suffer from migraine and stress-related headaches, avoid the pose.
  • Those with neck injuries, diarrhea and high blood pressure should not practice the asana.
  • Person with neck problems should not look up with performing the Triangle pose. Instead look straight or gaze down to the floor.
  • Keep in mind not to take support of the knee while practicing this pose. This could exert high pressure on your knee thereby causing knee problems.
